Exercise Is Medicine

The Governor’s Council encourages medical care providers to talk to their patients about the importance of exercise. We endorse Exercise is Medicine to prevent and treat chronic diseases including heart disease, diabetes, cancer, depression, and dementia.

Research indicates a clear connection between outdoor physical activity and good health. In collaboration with Vermont State Parks, we provide doctors with pre-printed “prescriptions” for exercise, which are really free day passes to Vermont State Parks.

Please speak with your doctor about how exercise can benefit your health, and ask for a “prescription” for exercise.

DeShan Foret - May 26, 2016 - 8:41 am

Hello, My name is DeShan and I am family wellness coach at UVM Vermont Family Based Approach, a family focused wellness intervention program. A few of our psychiatrists have requested the park passes prescriptions for exercise, however, we know nothing of a suggested timeline or how we will receive these. Will you please contact me to let me know the details. Thank you, DeShan

We will send out prescriptions next week to physicians who request them. Please tell us how many you will need and your mailing address. Our supply is limited but we want to encourage doctors to talk to their patients about the importance of exercising regularly and the connection between outdoor exercise and good health.

Hi, we write the 60 Plus column in the Rutland Herald and would like to feature exercise in the next one, including some of our programs as well as the prescription for exercise program. Just want to check that you are okay with that, and see if there are any relevant details that you would like me to include. Thanks. Janis

I am a nurse at the Mt. Ascutney Hospital Pediatric Physician’s Practice. Dr. Mary Bender, head of pediatrics, wanted me to inquire about getting Vermont Parks Perscription pads for our office. We had a couple but we are almost out. Could we please have more of these sent to us? There are three providers in our practice.
